I live in Barcelona for a year now. They put it down to historical, cultural and linguistic reasons. They claim to be oppressed by the central government. That is all a façade though. it’s based on little more than a frenzied hatred towards the rest of Spain and a region wide phenomenon of unjustified sentiments of victimization. That and pure greed of the richest region not wanting to provide to the poorest Regions. Historically speaking (always a weak argument) Catalonia has never been an individual state but always part of something bigger going back as far as the era of kingdoms when it was part of the kingdom of Aragon. Culturally speaking they are so similar you really have to dig to see any actual differences. Linguistically they have their own language (albeit extremely similar to Spanish). Ok, so I'd like to know what /es/'s problem is with people from Latin America. In my mind, they are literally examples of white assimilation of another lesser race.
